ARTISTS STATEMENT Peter Symons is an active artist, curator, and educator based in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. He received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (2004) and his Masters Degree From the Pratt Institute (2008). Peter’s work deals primarily with the use of new digital technologies, including digital fabrication techniques such as 3d printing, laser cutting, and CNC routing as well as creating original programs that respond to and interact with viewers. He is co-director of the FATVillage Projects Contemporary Art Space, a partner and artist for the public art and design collaborative Art+Light+Space, and works for Florida Atlantic University teaching digital fabrication and furniture design.
"I see my role as an artist as being akin to a conductor, orchestrating interactions between objects and participants. I want the viewer to become a participant, to establish a space that removes them from their expected experience, and forces reorientation and reexamination. To accomplish this task I work with objects that have both digital and physical components. My work is activated through interaction, and it is only through direct experience that the work can be wholly appreciated.
Data and digital technologies becomes a source of mechanical synesthesia. Objects can be translated from one state to another through the use of data. People often speak of what is lost in translation, but I believe that there is also something gained. The act of translation is an act of creation and out of this creation new and unintended meanings can arise.
Alone, data exists like a thought. It is illusory and intangible. The physical components of the artwork become the framework for the intangible. Using this framework the illusion can occupy the same space as the real. This hybrid of digital and physical becomes a model of the mind/body duality. The viewer enters into this layering of realities. The viewer becomes a participant and performer. Through this active relationship I hope to create a place of wonder and exploration." |
