ARTISTS STATEMENT
"I am startled by my everyday experiences and am constantly trying to paint them. Certain things I see connect to something I can’t quite get a handle on without painting them. There is also the problem of how to put the painting together as a material thing and in abstract terms: structure, color, mark-making, laying on the paint, drawing with the paint, thick, thin, smooth, rough.
These physical things keep evolving. They double back on themselves and reappear in altered ways. I want to get below the surface of the material when I paint to something essential about my experience of looking and seeing -- something that moves me or I find intriguing or funny. The ability to paint what I see requires constant investigation, trial and error, and practice; it is a skill that comes from looking. My paintings are a result of that search."
Dennis Aufiery received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with Neil Welliver, Alex Katz, Alfred Leslie, Rackstraw Downs, Yvonne Jacquette and Rudy Buchardt, New York artists influenced by Abstract Painting. He also studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Dennis' exhibition history includes Museum of American Art, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Harn Museum of Art, Portland Museum of Art, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Museum of Florida Art, Elliott Museum and Court House Cultural Center in Stuart, and in New York, Leo Castelli Gallery, Bowery Gallery, and recently First Street Gallery. Dennis received numerous awards, including Josef Albers Fellowship to the Skowhegan School, and Thomas Eakins prize from the Pennsylvania Academy. Since 2000, Dennis taught at the Armory Art Center.
