ARTISTS STATEMENT Marina has become well known in Miami and beyond for her photographs of objects “that evoke a particular place or personal history to explore ideas about identity, gender, territory, language and memory.” Her special emphasis on “the lives of women, as keepers of our culture”, and of the immigrant experience, stemming from her moving from her home in Argentina to Miami, have led to a growing body of work exploring memory, womanhood, and the unconscious.
Her most recent work, on display last spring in “Dark Continents” at the Dina Mitrani Gallery in Wynwood, has brought increased attention to her work. She explains, “I grew up in a patriarchal society, strongly influenced by psychoanalysis and Freud’s writings, and have always been disturbed by Freud’s reference to women’s sexuality as ‘Dark Continents”. She is “inspired by the Modernist’s further exploration of the unconscious... to unveil metaphorically the truth beneath our surface...the complex relationship between reality and the memory that lives within.” |
