ARTISTS STATEMENT "I create social interventions, cultural collages, interactive installations and poetic performances that incorporate drawing and sculpture. I utilize a combination of these expressive vehicles to bring fourth an urgency of living to the fullest, in the moment, and call attention to the fleeting nature of life. My creative works at heart are acts of appreciation that celebrate undervalued spaces, materials, and communities elevating them as gifts to be honored to enrich our lives.
I am moved to create experiences that projects from an interconnected celebratory lens to broaden our perspective of unspoken subjects such as death, race, undervalued labor, and materials. It is my intention to upgrade the operating system of our cultural paradigm and that is the stand from which my work is born."
Stephen Backhus is an emerging interdisciplinary artist who resides in West Palm Beach and teaches at U.B Kinsey School of the Arts. Stephen studied Drawing and Sculpture at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design where he received his BFA. He then continued to explore the relationship between various artistic mediums at Indiana University where he received his MFA in Expanded Formats. Stephen has exhibited his work locally and internationally and is most recognized for his sculptural installations with drawing and performance elements. |
