ARTISTS STATEMENT Mirtha Moreno [Jamnea Jacas-Finlayson] was born in Havana, Cuba, in the late 70s during a well-documented time of religious and political oppression. Abstract expressionist artist Jamnea Jacas, aka Mirtha Moreno, immigrated to the United States as a child in 1980. Raised in South Florida amongst a growing Hispanic population, she received recognition for her natural artistic talent and passion from an early age. This form of expression became a way to convey the thoughts and emotions that arose from her experiences as a young Cuban exile. Working in oil and acrylic, Finlayson’s pieces are often aesthetically influenced by images found in her dreams and surroundings. Her abstract style evokes the feeling of movement and drama. Through early experiences as an artist, she found that her ambiguous given name, Jamnea Jacas, provided her with an unwanted anonymity in regards to both her gender and cultural background. The pseudonym Mirtha Moreno was born of a frustration to be recognized as a female artist with deep Cuban roots.
Finlayson graduated with an Associate of Arts from Palm Beach State College and attended Florida Atlantic University to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts, while serving as a drawing & sketching, and Ceramics teacher at the Boynton Beach Art Center. In 2003 she opened her own frame shop and gallery in West Palm Beach where she featured her own work and the work of other local up and coming artists. In 2010 she expanded her gallery and relocated to the nationally acclaimed Antique Row Art and Design district where she now exhibits works from nationally and internationally recognized artists. As the owner of JF Gallery, a well respected and renowned local contemporary art gallery, she has participated in internationally known art fairs such as Art Palm Beach and Art Naples. She has also served as curator and judge to many local art shows and continues to support the local art scene. She currently serves as Secretary and Treasurer of the West Palm Beach Antique Row Art & Design District Association and is involved in the Art Synergy movement as a district Leader. |
