ARTISTS STATEMENT It’s a delicate process in my art for me to “reveal” the subject of women’s issues, which also can be defined as exposing. The culture which I grew up in encouraged the shame and concealment of women and girls. Things must be hidden and concealed which belong to women. This is taught to us as we grow up. In fact, I frequently remind myself I no longer must hesitate to reveal issues about the mistreatment of women, while witnessing the same taboos, over and over – even more aggressive – half a century later.
Women have become accustomed to this “disidentification”, sometimes unconsciously passed to the next generation by women. Although the predominant societal structure is patriarchal, traditions and customs are transferred from women to women, mothers to daughters. Women bow down and give in to traditions, to men. Women teach their children fear of their fathers, pushing their identity to the background. The kitchen is the most convenient place for a Mother to transfer her lost identity to her daughter. Men leave women alone in the kitchen and women feel free in there. The woman takes pride in herself, her kitchen, her traditions, and with this pride, she nurtures her daughter, happily, in the safety of the Kitchen. As a result, in my art, I want to emphasize the point of view of women by women.
