ARTISTS STATEMENT "I am an artist and an activist and each complements the other.
As an artist of conscience, I do not have any singular cause… the overarching thought being that once there are social, economic and political inequities, once there is discrimination, oppression, injustice, exploitation… My art is my voice calling for social change, setting out to query, to stimulate thought, and even to upset the natural order of things.
I also want my work to be beautiful, to combine beauty with death, oppression, exploitation… I try to do it in a balanced way."
Louis Davis has been making images since 1975 when he started working in film and television, and photographic images since 1982. By 1996, his images were exploring the social and political themes of nationalism, environment and religion. His current works are photography based post-camera digital constructions.
Louis Davis holds a post-graduate diploma in mass communications from the University of West Indies and a diploma in graphic design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. He has won awards in Jamaica and a South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship in 2007. His work is in collections in Canada, Europe, China, Japan, the United States and the Caribbean. He currently lives in Tianjin, China. |
