ARTISTS STATEMENT I have been an active potter/sculptor since 1968. A graduate of Hunter College in New York, I studied with Elsbeth Woody, Susan Petersen and John Mason. I have shown in numerous group, national, solo and invitational shows in DC, New York, Vermont and Florida. I co-founded two artist co-operatives, one in NYC and one in Ballston Spa, NY. I also established my own pottery studio and gallery where I taught both handbuilding and wheel throwing.
Clay is for me both magical and a language--it speaks to me. Working with it enters my entire being--it is a tangible, spiritual, creative connection with the earth--it is what makes all of us part of a common humanity. I believe that art is a critically important language that cannot be separated from its social, human context. It helps us scale the sometimes overwhelming abyss to understanding, wholeness, and peace.
* Madeline was instrumental in organizing and co-leading the Art, Women and Culture Art Salons when they began at the Armory in Spring, 2012. |
