ARTISTS STATEMENT The consistent undercurrent in Talya Lerman’s work is nostalgia. Whether she is using photos from a bygone era, vintage books, or old postage stamps, her art embodies an agelessness that is intentional. The artist states, “I want people to not easily guess in which time period each piece was created. Either that or they identify a time period and assume the works came from then.” She loves paper, both handmade as well as found, and is immensely enamored with the look and feel of antique books and magazines. Lerman interweaves disparate materials such as etiquette guides, cookbooks, and debutante ball invitations to create a new context in her images.
Art played a major role in Talya Lerman’s childhood. Her mother is an artist. Lerman started figure drawing at five years old as her mother founded a drawing group at their home in the 1980's. She graduated from Dreyfoos School of the Arts and received her BA from Northwood University. She has assumed many roles in the art world including student, figurative artist, painter, writer, performance artist, gallery director, curator, and arts administrator. As Director of Education and Exhibitions at the Armory Art Center from 2012 – 2014, Talya was instrumental in founding and nurturing the Art Salons at the Armory. She is currently Development Manager at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.
