ARTISTS STATEMENT I collect unique things that I hope will form a dialog with other objects in my work. I paint them as if they’ve always belonged together. Combining vintage and contemporary objects in my work ties the past to the present. Alice Neel sought to reveal the inner lives of her sitters; Lucien Freud reached after truth and substance with heavily impasto brushwork; and Janet Fish brought transparency and reflection to new heights all of which greatly influenced me. I work on large imaginative still life paintings, filled with decorative and reflective objects. I also paint large scale nudes and portraits. My work is an inquiry into my surroundings and times. When painting in my studio, I feel part of a long tradition of painters working from observation. Color choice is an essential element of the overall emotive story I aim to tell.
Among my favorite subjects are everyday ones, especially certain glassware or that which reflects light. Most recently, I like to paint a combination of objects joined together by a theme, aiming to show that everything is intertwined.
At times, I like to re-contextualize source images, such as historical photos, to create a new narrative. The new story often refers to current events in my life, the life of Americans, or issues on a global scale. Like Rembrandt and Titian, I think of objects as having a sometimes forgotten life, awaiting their turn to become anew. I often paint over used canvases, preferring ones with a heavily textured surface, building on what is already there. My brushwork and the preexisting surface combine to surprising effect. |
