ARTISTS STATEMENT
“A chair is still a chair, even when there's no one sitting there
But a chair is not a house, and a house is not a home
When there's no one there to hold you tight,
And no one there you can kiss good night.” Burt Bacharach - A House is Not a Home
This Dionne Warwick/Burt Bacharach song popped into my head one day sitting in my apartment. My house is also my studio, but I have set it up like a home: I have a dining table and chairs, extra seats in the living room for guests, all the accoutrements of a normal domicile. But, perhaps because I am single, tables and the floor are often covered in projects. This had me look anew at all the pieces of furniture I have and ideas of societal convention, need, want, or value. Somehow, taking these objects and divorcing them from their intended use seemed interesting to me. As I like to do: turn an object from one of use, to one of contemplation. All the pieces here are temporarily woven with embroidery yarns and have been paired with sculptural creatures to further blur their meaning as an object.
Born and raised in Miami, Martin Casuso is the product of a Cuban Freudian analyst father and Dutch born artist mother. A continuous late bloomer, he received his BFA in Mixed Media from Florida International University at 40 and an MFA in Sculpture from The University of Miami at 50. He is known for his sculptures and installations made with found and made objects and textiles. He says: " The basis for all my work originates from the domestic sphere; the themes often subconscious preoccupations with personal memory. Found household objects and discards, often thrift store or recycled finds, as well as images from film or television, craft materials and techniques come together to acknowledge an affinity with all things hidden or overlooked. The transformations follow Jasper Johns’ dictum: 'Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it. Do something else to it.' "
