ARTISTS STATEMENT
"the others" is a project begun in 2013, consisting of over 150 small drawings, an exploration of what it means to be visually and culturally “different”. The narrative is vague but exposes “man’s inhumanity to man”, as it explores OTHERNESS.
This faux society of small, almost identical individuals live in caves, are innovative, and generally peaceful. They live invisibly until a group of “humans” discovers them and become alarmed by their appearance and cultural disparities. Once they are uncovered, their way of life leads to fear and misunderstanding. A great upheaval ensues and their way of life is threatened resulting in an explosive end…or is it a new beginning?
Contemporary issues concerning man/woman as he is pitted against nature and society has always been the root of colodny’s practice. She borrows imagery from the internet, newspapers and magazines, and mixes them with her imagination to produce this body of work. The surreal atmosphere of layered compositions leads us to no answers…time and place is not of concern. This series is a surreal and universal appraisal of society today, yesterday and tomorrow.
lou anne colodny’s experiences in dance, theater and museum administration have greatly informed her videos, drawings and photographic work. She received a 2008 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship, and Best in Show for her videos in the 2005 Boca Museum of Art’s 54th Annual All Florida Exhibition. colodny was the founding director of MoCA, Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, Florida and director of its precursor, COCA for 15 years. Her studio is at Under the Bridge Art Space / Bridge Red Studios, North Miami, where she curates exhibitions of Miami Artists who are not represented by galleries. |
