ARTISTS STATEMENT
Hand felted maps detailing sea-level rise over the next century were created using reclaimed materials and sustainably sourced wool. Information used to create these maps was gathered from the NASA website, nautical maps, and Eyes on the Rise Flood App.
To insure accuracy, the information was vetted through environmental scientist Galen Truer. If we maintain our current habits, going about business as usual, we can expect sea level to rise 3 feet within 50 years, and 5 feet by the turn of the century, drastically changing the way we live in South Florida. This does not account for temporal changes during King tides or storm surges, but an overall change.
Lucinda Linderman, a native to Chattanooga, Tennessee, is an environmental artist and environmental art curator living and working in Miami. She explains: "I collect industrial and post consumer packaging, which becomes the building blocks of my sculptures. This material, disregarded by many, has its own history of travel from factory to store, being created to be thrown away. I highlight the inherent value, leaving traces of what was, transforming the material into something new, playful, adding value to these discarded materials.”
Lucinda Linderman holds an MFA from the University of Miami in Sculpture and a B.A. in Biology. From 2001 until 2006, she worked as a master apprentice to renowned constructivist sculptor John Henry, where both her aesthetic sense and technical skills were honed. She was an artist- in-residence at the CANDO Arts Co-op in Miami Beach from 2009 to 2011. During a two year residency at the Deering Estate, Lucinda was a Special Projects Curator for the Festival of the Arts "In Deep" exhibition, a mentor environmental Artist, and an integral part of Deering’s National Endowment for the Arts Grant. She has been in juried group shows in the Young at Art Museum in Davie, Fl, the Lowe Museum in Coral Gables, Fl, and in the Coral Gables Museum of Art. She is a co curator and exhibitor of “Reclaimed Landscape | Recycled Art Practice in South Florida” at The Hartvest Project in Pinecrest Gardens through February 9. |
