ARTISTS STATEMENT
Geology has been one of the foundations of my life. Growing up with a geologist father, every road cut was labeled by its epoch, and of course, short-driving respites were looking through eroded layers looking for fossils… Current ceramic work attempts to revisit and imagine novel geologic formations celebrating those early years.
Sculpting clay/materials, comes from the studio traps and scraps full of impurities from the floor, is used to create these projects. The vitrification process (firing) burns and melts the impurities creating surprising surfaces which add to the eroded or volcanic appearance. Oxides are then used to enhance final look of each piece, some fired as many as a dozen times.
Duane Brant moved with wife, artist Pip Brant, to be a full time artist, to south Florida in 1999 from ranch life in the mountains of Wyoming. Education includes BA from University of Montana and MFA in 1992 from University of Wyoming. His art studio located in Hollywood provides opportunity to create with a variety of media, which presently include sculpting, ceramics, performance, and installation. He is an Adjunct Professor at Barry University, Miami Shores. As a member of the performance art group, Kunstwaffen, he has traveled the country creating installations and performing. Duane’s innovative design work includes creating ant proof pet bowls and ant proof bee hive stands, salt dehydrator for table top making sea salt and novel bonsai containers. Brant is a member of two traditional south Florida bands playing the tuba, and of course plays tuba Christmas every year. |
