ARTISTS STATEMENT
Dorotha (Dori) Grace Lemeh is best known for her mixed media paintings, and more recently, her collaged, digital still & moving imagery.
In many of her artworks, Dorotha arranges or “stages” a single figure, pair or group of figures with other heavily laden symbolic items to create tableaus that support her audience’s willingness to construct their own narrative tales about beauty, identity and desire.
Dorotha’s art piece, Service, reflects in subtle ways our understanding of complex narratives that allow the viewer to consider such things associated with the ‘lot’ of women. Visual storytelling is used to examine complex narratives associated with the body—specifically that of women. Dorotha utilizes various artistic methods to delve into historic, literary, mythic and popular cultural themes, which, at times, offer a different understanding of the (usually binary) roles that are either assigned to, and/or taken on by women.
Dorotha Grace Lemeh is an Associate Professor of Visual Art at Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University. As a professional visual artist she has participated in over 80 exhibitions both nationally and internationally, receiving award recognition that includes Best of Show, 1st Place and Honorable Mention. |
