ARTISTS STATEMENT
Growing up in New York City, and later Chicago, I was exposed to a rich and diverse environment both culturally and socially. Exploring the museums in these major cities from an early age I had a fascination for fine art as well as the work of ancient cultures.
These vivid impressions would enhance my approach as a decorative painter and muralist for the interior design trade. Caseins and waxes used in antique restoration became a favorite medium in my painting.
The approach to the fine art collection became a series of narratives which celebrate our common experience. The first series and solo exhibition was MILK. The paintings were oversized in muted colors to create a sense of calm. Milk is the first communion among all mammals, mother to child. My most recent series, Bad Children Blessed Beasts, incorporated ceramic sculptures of children in playful encounters with mice and rats.
All the work emerges as an idea that comes to life with intent but no blueprint. I want the viewer to be amused, reflective and maybe a little shifted in how we see our world.

Jo Ann moved to South Florida in 1981 and began designing textiles, murals and faux finishes for the interior design trade. At the same time, she began showing her art work in exhibitions. She had a solo exhibition at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County in January, 2016, and a retrospective show of 30 years of work at Coral Springs Museum of Art, in November, 2016.
