ARTISTS STATEMENT
My Fiber Constructions are inspired by Nature and Life Cycles in the sense that the structures represent similar structures in the growth of forms in the natural world and the concept of birth, growth, death and rebirth as metaphors for life cycles. These Fiber constructions are built using traditional Textile techniques, such as knotting and looping, wrapping and twining to create three dimensional forms and installations combining these constructed forms with digitally printed fabrics to create environments that represent Nature in an abstracted manner.
Leora Stewart has been creating and constructing fiber artworks since the 1960’s, receiving her BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute, Chicago. Leora has a long history of national and international exhibitions as well as architectural commissions and has curated several exhibitions and has been awarded two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. She has taught fiber arts at prestigious schools throughout the US. Leora currently teaches fiber arts at the Armory Art Center. Her work has been reviewed and written about in many publications. |
