ARTISTS STATEMENT
My artwork is comprised primarily of large, finely-detailed charcoal drawings. Charcoal because it’s the most accommodating material to draw with. I’ve been using it since high school and have yet to find its limits. Sometimes I use pastel too, expecting it to perform much like the charcoal.
As I work, my aim is to fulfill my capabilities. Every day I choose to work in that realm where what I know meets all I don’t know. Every drawing entails some technique I didn’t know when I started.
Each of the drawings begins with an imprint of my body. My mind is then confronted with an image it did not create. A dialogue ensues between the mind and the body’s imprint. And, to the extent that the mind is able to submit to the body’s input, I’m able to create drawings I never imagined.
Ultimately, what is imprinted is not merely my form but my existence or identity. Something diaphanous leaves a mark, it makes a true statement that I then elaborate and learn from in the process.
I’m largely self-taught as an artist. I feel a kinship with the tradition of women artists of my lifetime who’ve labored quietly in their studios, following their own impulses. Their experiments unfold apart from the male-driven art world. The efforts of these women artists not only satisfy them, they help keep the full range of what’s possible in art-making on hand, in hand.
