ARTISTS STATEMENT
Pip Brant, who works in fiber and other materials, and Duane Brant, whose training is in ceramics, metalsmithing, printmaking, sculpture and performance, work independently and collaboratively on socially provocative installations and works in many media. Both grew up in the West and Midwest, and say that experiences there have profoundly influenced their work.
Golf Wars
A worn Chinese carpet has been re-purposed as a giant map of the Middle Eastern conflict. Oversized French knots act as pixelated images of two black hawk helicopters and are positioned on the ends of the carpet. The map is embroidered and vaguely tells a limited history of the region. A set of golf clubs is offered to express the final goal of US conquest- A golf course.
Work Simulation Unit
The four foot tall interactive sculpture is equipped with a motion sensor that activates a violent circular movement of the crocheted palm tree marionettes. The small crocheted palm trees are suspended on a wood structure by black book linen thread.
The project started out with a commission work on palm trees for the Frost Museum’s inaugural installation on the children’s interactive art center. As a former preschool teacher, Pip knew that children love puppets and most of the time people would not think of palm trees as puppet subjects. This project evolved into a mechanical component that could animate the puppets when motion was detected. The frenetic motion results in a humorous dance that could be a mock hurricane preparation study.
Later on, on a more gigantic scale, large, limp wool crocheted palm tree rugs were constructed to experiment with the meaning when changing the scale. The subject of palm trees is ongoing, but the latest concern is the replacement of canopy trees such as live oaks for a monoculture of palms is disconcerting. These trees are white as bones. |
