ARTISTS STATEMENT
Through my art making practice I combine notions of quotidian household surroundings with those of the ephemeral or surreal. This is a symptom of my fascination in our culture’s relationship with decoration and surface treatment. Of particular intrigue to me is the woven doily. As an object of inheritance, I find it both endearing and alienating. The doily’s traditional function was to absorb oils from the human body in order to protect finer furniture and surroundings from the wear of daily life - a sheath of sorts. The works Cerement and Gossamer Daphne imagine the doily as a second skin, or membrane between these conflicting realms of romanticism and reality. These pieces are made with reverence to the joy and toil that so deeply impacts my memory of my grandmother. Moving her hands with laboring gestures in service of crocheted decorations for the home provided her with a distinct sense of fulfillment and identity. When she lost the ability to move her hands, I was witness to a new type of death and an unprecedented category of grief – the ultimate reality from which no object can provide protection. Through my own process of making I seek to understand, celebrate, mourn, and memorialize the life of my grandmother. Where some might simply see the kitsch nature of an antiquated ornamental device, I feel the physical memory of a meaningful human presence.
